Cosponsor the Tobacco Tax Equity Act of 2021

Tobacco accounts for hundreds of thousands of deaths and costs hundreds of billions of dollars in medical costs and lost productivity in the U.S. each year. The rise in youth use of tobacco products, particularly e-cigarettes, in recent years is especially concerning, especially after years of steady decline. One of the most effective ways to reduce tobacco use, especially among youth, is to increase the price of tobacco products.

We urge you to send the below message to your members of Congress to encourage them to cosponsor the Tobacco Tax Equity Act of 2021 (S. 1314/H.R. 2786), which would close tax and regulatory loopholes that the tobacco industry has exploited for large cigars, smokeless tobacco, and pipe tobacco, as well as increase the federal tax rate on cigarettes, peg it to inflation to ensure it remains an effective public health tool, and set the federal tax rate for all other tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, at the same level.

Cosponsor the Tobacco Tax Equity Act of 2021

Dear [Decision Maker],

I write to urge you to cosponsor the Tobacco Tax Equity Act of 2021 (S. 1314/H.R. 2786), which would close tax and regulatory loopholes exploited by the tobacco industry and increase the federal tax rate on cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and other nicotine products to reduce youth nicotine use.

Tobacco is the leading cause of preventable and premature death, and tobacco-related disease accounts for one in five deaths in America. In 2020, 23.6% of high school students reported using tobacco products, and use of e-cigarettes, now the most popular nicotine product among youth, has skyrocketed in recent years among teens and young adults.

The tobacco industry has worked for decades to avoid regulation and target youth with their addictive products. One of the most effective ways to reduce tobacco use, especially among youth, is to increase the price of tobacco products.

The Tobacco Tax Equity Act of 2021 would increase the federal tax rate on cigarettes, peg it to inflation to ensure it remains an effective public health tool, and set the federal tax rate for all other tobacco products at the same level. This would create the first federal e-cigarette tax and increase the tobacco tax rate for the first time in a decade. The bill would close tax and regulatory loopholes that the tobacco industry has exploited for large cigars, smokeless tobacco, and pipe tobacco.

The rates of youth smoking have been declining for years and we were on the cusp of making this young generation the first to broadly reject tobacco use. Instead, rates are rising and too many young people have become hooked on nicotine products. We must do all we can to reverse this trend.

Thank you for your consideration. I hope you will cosponsor the Tobacco Tax Equity Act of 2021 to help reduce tobacco use, especially among youth.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]
